My Starry Night

Hello there! Today I am going to talk about "My Starry Night."
This was done for a demonstration for the summer reading program 2012 at the Roseville Library.
The theme given to me was Dream Big-Read.
I love to read at night, so I made my guy resting on the moon.

Here are a couple of sketches and a color scheme idea.
I usually do a few color thumbnails, but I already had a plan for this in my head.
I always do some rough sketches in my sketch book and pick the one I like, then work on the detailed composition.
After I get the composition, I enlarge the size to the canvas I will be working on.
I am very precise, so I like to know everything about the piece before I start working on canvas.

Here is the piece with just the background. The moon isn't tacked down yet either.
I usually use 35mm film cases for each of my colors, but for the blended background I needed a larger palette.
I found that Corelle plates work the best because the paint sticks well and it is easy to clean.

Aaaand ta-da! Here is the finished piece ;))

I didn't intend to go for Van Gogh's work.
But many people who saw this thought of his piece, and I had no problem with it.
Maybe because this piece came after I took a modern art history class.
Maybe I had image subconsciously. I don't know..
Anyhow, luckily I had the nerve to name mine after the master piece ;p
